Foundation Dogs

These dogs were the initial imports who formed the foundation of the breed here in the UK. These dogs were brought over with the intention of breeding or furthering the breed here. These dogs are intact and either have contributed towards the breed here or may be bred down the line. This list only refers to dogs who were imported from other countries into the UK, and not dogs bred domestically.

2018: Ronin Akiko 'Akiko' (Tone No Benifuji Go Funato Kamiyama Sou x Sankt Xandors Ohana) - Akiko was born June 23rd and was bred by Lindsay Vangrootenbruel at Takai Kennel in Belgium, from their first litter, out of old American lines by a Japanese import sire. Akiko holds OFA CHIC level health testing and was the dam of the first ever UK Kai litter in October 2022. Akiko is an active breed ambassador with the club and with the Assocation of Nihon Ken. She is owned and imported by KKCGB founding committee member Astor Williams of Ounoki Kensha, and lives in Shropshire with her daughter Nami.

2021: Jikino Kensha No Mizar Go 'Hayami' (Gekkoo No Kallan Kuohu x Yamabushi No Mayumi) - Hayami was born August 22nd and was bred by Riina and Juho Haapakallio at Jikino Kensha in Finland. She is down from mostly Japanese import lines, her sire is from well established lines in Europe and her dam is an import from the United States. She is owned and imported by KKCGB founding committee member Ashlii Prigmore of Akaryuu Kennel, and lives in South Wales with fellow Kai Ken Flóki.

2023: Taihei Shokirou Go Yoridokoro Ichiha Sou 'Shoki' (
Migser Go Aira Sou x Hoshino Maihime Go Yuugiri Sou) - Shoki was born in Japan at Yuugiri Sou in August 2023 from lines bred and used for Search and Rescue by Daizen Kinoshita of the Yakushima Rescue Dog Society. Shoki comes from lines mostly new to the UK and is the first Kai Ken Aigokai registered male and first Japanese import to be brought over for the intention of breed preservation. Shoki is owned by KKCGB founding committee member Astor Williams of Ounoki Kensha and Maureen Williams.

History of Imported Dogs

Below is a list of all known Kai Ken who have been imported into the UK at any time.
This list also contains dogs who are not included in the foundation population. These dogs who are part of our history in the UK, who have either not been bred from or are no longer residents of the United Kingdom either due to moving or death. While these dogs did not contribute to the later population of the breed here, they played an important part by being among the first Kai Ken residents here and deserve to be remembered as such.
